MagicalForest - what is it that you find best about the D90 compared to the D40 - do my points reflect the reality?

Wish I had the funds to go D90, but I've just been scolded by my beautiful wife for buying an SB-400 for £70! Think the 35mm F/1.8 and the D90 might be a while away yet! C'mon EBay - sell sell sell!

Yes, very valid points, Tom!

The 11 focal points are amazing. I love the LCD on top. There's so much info - right there!

It's great having buttons assigned to ISO, WB, etc. too - very quick! The LCD is great. Live view has come in very handy forme. Color control is better and bracketing helps a TON! I want to try to get into tasteful HDR.

Overall, I just feel I can do more with it, and that I was outgrowing the D40. I just love it.

I think, if you`re looking at wanting to make 8x10 photos with cropping - then perhaps, what you are looking for is a longer lens.

The old d70 with the 6mp sensor is capable of printing really nice 13x19 prints... The d90 will certainly give you more body and more megapixels. (More megapixels will certainly force you to work on your technique too )

I think if you need to crop very much - other than for aspect ratio - you`re probably using the wrong lens. (Granted, sometimes we don`t have the right lens, or we don`t have time to switch to the right lens )

Default Have patience

Like yourself I own the D40 and have been using it for the past 3 years with little or no incident... I love this camera but have often considered "upgrading" to a better body like the D90, D300s etc.

However, do take note that these bodies are also heavier, and while weight is not issue to some, for those of use who love our lenses and bring them around, the extra weight of the camera body is surely to weigh us down (no pun intended.)

Like some forum members who have suggested investing in better lenses, I too would advocate going down that road. If you're no stranger to manual focussing do look around for second hand AI or AIS prime lenses which are made in Japan, have metal bodies and most are optically superior to many a zoom lens at their respective focal lengths.

That said, Nikon is purportedly going to release a new D90 in the coming months, which is why I noticed alot of people here in Singapore off-loading their older D90 and D300 bodies in anticipation of the new model.

yes patience for the new D95 might be nice, but upgrading now will still save you some money unless you need to have the latest and greatest. ... rumor has the d95 at like 39 AF points...
also, yes weight is a factor... recently i swapped my d40 for my friends d90 and his first words, "wow thisis light" ...

i myself want to upgrade... just funds arent letting me right now.. of course...
