So...like everyone, I want nice sharp pictures. I heard, or dreamed, that if you lock up the mirror when taking longer exposure shots it help to reduce camera vibration. Is this true?

The D300 is the lowest on the totem pole with the M-Up mode.

Hey Os...my manual shows me how to do a mirror lock up, but it may be for cleaning purposes only....is this so?

Exactly. If you look in the menu, the item for that particular function is actually called "mirror lockup for cleaning". It locks the mirror up and turns the power off to allow you to clean the sensor from dust or other contaminants. It will NOT allow you to shoot.

Actually, if you want MLU, you need a D300. Or a Canon XS
[ducks].
