i bought the Nikon ML-L3 remote release for my D40 and had no problems with it. B&H Photo has it online for $17.95.

Yep, the official Nikon one is so reasonably priced there's very little reason in my mind to go with something else if you're just after a basic shutter release.

The ML-L3 is a wireless remote shutter release.

It uses an infrared light beam to trigger the shutter release on the D90. That means it is limited to lin-of-sight use,

The window that looks for that light signal is on the front of the camera, so the ML-L3 also has to be in front of the camera to work. In a pinch, you should be able to jury rig a reflector that would let the ML-L3 work from behind the camera.

Also because it is a light signal, in direct sunlight the effective range of the release is diminished

I would also recommend the ML-L3 from Nikon. I bought mine from Amazon and I think it set me back all of about $10. It works great and you don't have to deal with another cable hanging from the camera!

I have both wireless and wired releases. Wireless is great if you want to be in the picture, but for Macro or long exposure I uses the wired. Much more reliable for triggering the shutter.

I have both a wired and a wireless.

The ML-L3 I had for my D40 (which should have switched over flawlessly) doesn't work for my D90, so I'm working with the Opteka Remote for Nikon.

Amazon.com: Opteka RC-2 Wireless Remote Control for Nikon D40, D40x, D50, D60, D70, D70s, D80, D90, D3000, & D5000 Digital SLR Camera (Nikon ML-L3 Replacement): Electronics

It works better than my ML-L3 ever did!

As for the wired one, I use the MC-DC for D90. It's great.

Amazon.com: MC-DC2 remote cord for D90: Electronics
