Thanks a lot of people. I really appreciate your help.

My conclusion is that the Nikon D90 I almost bought has something wrong the mirror or maybe the penta-prism. The D90 and the 50D have similar viewfinders, maybe the D90 wins by a nose according to some opinions and reviews.

I can call it a day. Thanks a lot for your info.

(now maybe I'll go for the D90 trough adorama).

I don't think the D90 doesn't has a pentaprism. I believe it has a pentamirror, like all Nikon's other entry-level cameras.

The 50D has a pentaprism, which is why it is the prosumer Canon lineup..

According to Nikon the D90 has a pentaprism. See:

As noted, it's a pentaprism. And the D90 isnt an "entry-level" camera.

Default Manual

Ok, the mistery is solved, but I just want to add this:

On the D90 manual they say that the viewfinder will only get clear when you put on the battery, even if the camera is turned off.
Otherwise, it stays dark.

So, it´s normal

This was resolved on page 1. Thanks for playing.

All the Nikon entry-level cameras D40/D40x/D60/D3000/D5000/D90 have:

1/4000 max shutter speed
Compressed 12-bit RAW
Basic auto focus modules (Multi-CAM 530 (D40,D40x,D60), or Multi-CAM 1000 (D3000, D5000, D90))
Menu driven camera adjustments
Use the ML-L3 wireless remote
No PC port
No 10 pin connector

It seems that Nikon no longer lists the viewfinder type (pentaprism or pentamirror) for the D3000, D5000, nor the D90 in their tech specs. However, the Wikipedia entry for the D90 states the D90 has the pentaprism while the D5000 has a pentamirror so it seems my memory failed me, again.
