Let me take a few seconds to share my discovery because I'm really amazed.
I was a fraction of a second away from pressing the submit button posting this reply: ------------------ I can confirmed the view is the same if I turn the camera on or off. In fact, this is pretty much what I see with my eyes (this is the purpose of an SLR. What you see should be what you get). ------------------ But for some reason I thought: "What if I remove the battery to test it just like he did it in the store".... et voilà ! It's like having an ND filter +seeing all the noise at ISO 6400 right in the viewfinder ! No wonder you were concerned hahaha. But as soon as I put the battery back in it's gone and I see like with my own eye. So let's get back to the important stuf.... go get yourself a D90 !!!! and tell the guy he won't sell any unless he puts battery in. Take care

:eyeroll: It's called an LCD overlay. The D90 has one (which is why you can turn the grid lines on and off), and the 50D doesn't.

NOT SO FAST MY FRIENDS!!!!
So I went to the store and asked to the salesman to put a battery on it... They went and looked for the damn thing for over half an hour. They brought it and and I finally saw the D90 with the power on. And the difference was obvious, no noise and a brighter viewfinder. I noticed that lcd screen didn't turned off as i put my eye close to the viewfinder... I don't know if the camera has this feature. Still, the viewfinder in the 50D is clearer that the D90... But I'm sure that the D90 they showed me has some serious issues, it didn't focused at all most of the times and the DOF preview button didn't work. I'm sure that if I look at the sensor or the mirror I'll find a nice finger print or something like that. So I can't use that particular model as a reference. So my question remains.. Which viewfinder is better, D90 or 50D? there.. simple question.

What kind of place did you go to purchase or look at cameras. Hell could they not put a battery in for you. I would go to a actual camera store rather than the corner store. And just for the record I think the D90 is the better buy all around.

Your probably not the only one and this might be the reason why they don't have proper demos / no batteries...
![]() As for the viewfinder, I never got the chance to look into a 50D, but on paper the only difference I can see is 96% coverage on the Nikon and 95% on the Canon. They are both using a pentaprism which provide you a better view compare to a mirror with the entry level. Inkista mentioned the LCD overlay on the D90, and she is a very knowledgable person. I guess she would have pointed out already if there was other major differences. Assuming there is a difference, does it will really allow you to create better pictures on the Canon ? As I said earlier, I would concentrade more on the ergonomics / feel of the camera. But in the end, if this is really bugging you, there is nothing wrong going with the Canon. It's still a very good camera. p.s. The D90 is apparently due for a replacement at the end of the summer / fall. Maybe you should wait to see the improvements.

That interesting about the D90 w/o a battery. Tried it on mine and, turned off and without a battery, it was out of focus and extremely noisy. Slid the battery in, while leaving the unit off, and the image instantly cleared up.
FWIW, I really love my D90... But I have ZERO experience with Canons. |
