The 50 AF-D won't autofocus on your D40x, so that may be a deal breaker. There is a 50mm f/1.4 AF-S, however, that will. If we're talking weddings, though, I'd generally advocate longer, but none of those currently AF on your body.

The 35mm is a great lens but wont be very useful for weddings as it's a bit short.

if you go to nikons website you can see the lens that are available. Unless you want to focus manually (which isn't a "bad" thing) you'll want to look at senes with the "SWM" silent wave motor. For your camera you need a lens with a built in motor. Same goes for lens made by tonika, tamron, sigma...

35mm is a little short for portrait work. The 50f1.4G would be better. Soon there will be a sigma 85f1.4 with a motor that should be awesome.

Why, when someone says they're going to be shooting a wedding, do people ALWAYS have to throw this comment out there?

Gear doesn't make the photographer, but if you're shooting a wedding- a WEDDING for crissakes- you should (a) know what you're doing already and (b) have the necessary gear- range and low light at the minimum. You don't get a second chance to shoot a wedding- you can't ask the bride to kindly ask everyone to come back tomorrow so you can reshoot it.

I understand all that, Al. I'm just curious as to why some folks assume that the people that are shooting these weddings don't understand the risks involved and feel compelled to announce from their pedestal that they're "over their heads", "under equipped", etc.
