I use both.
At base ISO, they're all the same. Once you get north of 800, the D700 is clearly better. Yes. What about it? They handle about the same, the D700 is marginally bigger. They both balance well with most of the pro glass. Important stuff is all in the same place.

I went from D300 to D3...pretty much the same deal.
Had to sell most of my lenses and upgrade to FX lenses. (sigma 10-20 for sigma 12-24 etc) I had some lenses from my film days which transitioned fine (Tokina 28-80 f/2.8, 80-200 f/2.8).... I agree with jdepould...I didn't really like my D300 at iso 1600...With my D3 I regularly let it go to 6400 (but only when necessary). I miss the crop factor. I do a lot of bird photography...To upgrade my big lenses to FX AND get the same effective focal length was EXPENSIVE. But overall, I am very happy. I love the D3 pro features: better batteries, built in drive, dual card slots etc etc....and it's performance....I find I can generally crop a D3 image and get just as good or better results than the D300 with it's built in crop...
