Default D90 bulb mode using remote

I´m having trouble getting the bulb mode to work with a remote. It immediately opens then closes. I was hoping that I could press once to open, a second time to close. I guess I´m either doing it wrong or it´s not possible. I do have a third party remote, but it shouldn´t matter I don´t think. An IR remote is an IR remote right?

The bulb setting on the camera is going to look for a press and hold to open/ hold open, then a release to close. The corded release will do this, I am not sure if an IR can be programmed to do this.

I'm wondering if it's because you're using a third party remote. I know that if I set the camera to Bulb and then press the shutter release on the camera, I have to hold it and releasing it will close the shutter. However, with my remote (ML-L3), it works just as you described wanting it to work. I press it once to open the shutter, I press it a second time to close it.

the nikon remote (on my D40) works as you want it to- once to open, once to close (when on Bulb)
