Default Can anyone tell me...

I'm still a rookie at allof this, can anyone explain how/what the distance scale is that's located on the top of the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 lens?

I want to make sure I'm using the lens properly
Thanks

It tells you the distance from the camera to where the lens is focused. It is applicable whether auto or manual focused. Later you might learn about zone (Prefocusing) focusing. In that case you use it to set the desired focusing distance.

Wow, really?

The distance scale indicates what distance the lens is focused to. If you focus on a subject at 20ft, the distance scale will indicate 20ft.

Pardon my candor: what are you doing with a 70-200 f/2.8 VR if you dont know what a distance scale is for?
