I did it, but just so i could have more selection on lenses. Plus I am a cheap bastard.
I kept my d40 though. I enjoy the fact that on the D70, you don't have to creep through the menu to make adjustments. They are right there on the command dial. That is a big plus for me. It does seem create a little more noise than my D40, but it is nothing obnoxious. I find it rather pleasing myself. I tend to underexpose a lot though. I do think the $50.00 is rather irrelevant. The D40 is a newer camera, and it and the D70 seem to be selling for about the same price everywhere I have checked. |

Look for a D80 instead: you should be able to find them cheap. Sadly, for me, they're going for 400-450.

I wouldn't do it. I owned a d40 and a d70 (not the S version, but with the upgraded firmware) and found that I prefered the ergonomics of the D70, but the image quality of the D40 was much better. Even though it's only $50, you really aren't getting that much in the D70s that you don't get from the D40, especially if you don't plan on using non AFS lenses.

Don't do it. The D40 probably has better image quality and if you don't have non- AF-S lenses it does not make sense.
