Default Nikon D3000 or D5000

Hello,
I am planning to purchase a DSLR,and was thinking of getting a DSLR either D3000 or D5000. Which one is better. Also at the same price is there any other DSLR. I am a newbie,so please bear with me. Do reply. Thanks.

which one's better? D5000. better sensor. most of everything is about the same. Neither will autofocus with lenses not designated AF-S (from Nikon) or BIM (from Tamron) or HSM (Sigma)

Certain lenses have an AF-S focusing motor in the lens. Some don't and rely upon a focusing motor in the camera body for autofocus. THe D3000 and D5000 bodies dont have the motor in the body, and therefore need the AF-S lenses for autofocus. Lenses without AF-S will still work perfectly, just won't autofocus.

Is Canon better than Nikon?
That's a loaded question, and one to which you'll never get a straight answer. Depending on what you're doing, on may be better than the other, but in general they're well matched. At this segment of the market, the bigger difference is controls and how the camera feels in your hands
