Default Advice on Settings, please!

My daughter's senior prom is Saturday and she asked me to come along to document while she and her friends get ready then take the pre-prom pictures of her, her friends and their dates. I am thrilled that my 18 year old wants me around at all so I really want to get this right.

The weather should be good, and we'll be in a beautifully landscaped yard with good light & lots of good shade, too. (late afternoon)

The only equipment I plan to bring is my D90 w/ kit lens (I don't think I'll need my 70-300 mm) & possibly a tripod but since mine isn't the most portable that might be a hassle.

What would be some good settings to start with for the outdoor shots? I'm not quite certain where to start.

pretty much... yeah, totally agree...

although for doing the pre-prom... the getting ready you might want to get more "intimate" in the photos

Well, that is very simple, easy advise. I think I can handle it Thanks!

Be sure to have a polarizer filter handy if you are outdoors to help with any glare from the sun and better color. Between f-8, f-11 are great for the job.
