What camera do you have? If you have a D50/70/80/90/300/700, you can get the D and it will auto-focus. If you have a D3000/5000/40/60 the G will auto focus, but the D will not. If that's not important to you, then you can look at things like build and quality. Try this comparison: Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens comparison

i have the d300, and im aware of the autofocus part of this.
I should have clarified more specifically what i was asking for, sorry.
As far as optics, quality and things like color fringing is the extra money worth it for the G rather than the D.

I get to hyped up in reading stuff, but im really considering the D rather than the G though.
I know i shouldnt be worried about what things are said in articles.

Thanks

The G is slightly sharper both wide open and stopped down.

The chart says that the G takes a 58mm filter. Is that correct? I hadn't heard of a 58mm filter before. Just curious. (I know that step up/down rings are available.)

That's correct. It's not the most common size (damnit Nikon!), but it's a standard size.

It used to be that you'd get lenses in 52, 67and 77mm, nothing else. Now they can be anything from 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, 72, 77. Those are just Nikon sizes. They also have 52mm slot in (for the super teles and the 14-24), and some older lenses (namely Leica) take anything from a 39, 42 and 49 size, while MF is a whole new ball of wax: My Bronica uses 67 or 95mm filters.

Thanks, OS. Too many sizes to keep straight. But, I have a lens that takes 72mm filters, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

The 35/2 is a AF-D lens, so it wont autofocus on the D40/40x/60/3000/5000 bodies. It's also not quite as fast, and isn't as good a performer. If you're not planning on moving to FX, the 35/1.8 would be a better choice.

Some people find 50 too long on DX. I don't, but some do. You'd have to see whether 50mm is too long for your needs. If it is, then get a 35mm. If it isnt, then the 1.4 is likely your best bet.
