I'm not a nikon user Lindsie but you might get a better response posting in the Nikon section down near the bottom of the forums.
Here you might just get lotsa views before anyone drops by, able to help.

Moved over to Nikon now
![]() What about something like: Amazon.com: Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR [Vibration Reduction] Zoom Nikkor Lens: Electronics ? Would get you some more zoom, would auto focus on your camera, has VR, and should be right around $200.

Sadly, $200 doesn't get much in the photo world (*sigh*), but the 55-200 VR is a great place to start. it's a bit over that $200 price at the moment (at least here in Canada) but you might be able to find it for less in the US.

For that price tag the only thing you will be able to touch is the 55-200VR - and new I think it costs more than that. It is a very good lens for the price, but is still a kit lens in terms of quality. The Nikon 70-300VR (don't even think about the old non-VR one) can be had for about $400 used. It will give you longer reach, has a better VR system and a much better build quality.

Are you looking to zoom in on distant objects, or are you looking to get up close to nearby objects (also called a "macro")? Those are very different. The 55-200 is a good lens for distant-zooming, but a macro lens will be much more expensive (and also open up some cool possibilities). Note that the 55-200 is NOT good for macros, however, and I wouldn't want you to get it if you're expecting that!
