My D90 with the kit lens, 18-55mm took a fall, and my lens is ruined, my body is still good, thank goodness!! Naturally it happened the weekend before I am due to take team photos for my son's soccer team! I would like some help figuring out a good replacement lens for everyday use. I have a 55-200mm as well as an old 28-90mm D that was on my old 35mm D70. Thanks for any input.

Not sure exactly what you are asking. Do you want to just get another 18-55 or are you looking for something that it could not do? Do you want a wider lens - if so a Sigma 10-20mm is a nice one. Trying telling us what it is you want.

The salesman was pushing a 60mm Tamron macro lens. Nice lens.....
I guess the major problem is I don't know what I want. The old lens was a nice lens to just always have on the camera for shots around the house, with the kids or wife. However, if I want to start taking actual portraits and "framed" shots, maybe this macro is the way to go. $500 is a lot of money to spend for something when your not sure..... Thanks for the help R |

If you just want the same lens, then replace it.
If you didn't like the 18-55 and are looking to upgrade then it would help us out if you told us what you hated about the old lens, and how much you're looking to spend. There are, as you may have noticed, about a kajillion walkaround zooms out there, so knowing what you want most in the new lens (more reach, wider angle, faster autofocus performance, wider max. aperture, better contrast/color, etc. etc.) can help us guide you to the one that's going to fit what you want to do with it.This isn't about finding "the best" lens. This is about finding the best lens for you. My personal tastes, but a macro is good as a macro lens, but just a little too sharp for portraiture. Mine shows the pores. My druthers when it comes to portraiture would be to add a fast prime (50/1.4 or 35/1.8) to the lineup, rather than using my walkaround to do the job.

When I sold my D40 to get the D90, the kit lens went with it. My logic about lenses for the D90 was that I didn't want any of the 18-xx kit lenses, because (1) I knew I wanted to go wider for landscapes, (2) I wasn't impressed with the build quality of the 18-55, and (3) I didn't particularly want to end up with an overlap in the 18-24 range. I eventually got a new Tokina 12-24 for landscapes and a used Nikon 28-105 from KEH as a walk-around lens. Both are AF (not AF-S), and both were reasonably inexpensive ($400 for the Tokina and about $160 for the 28-105). Very happy with this arrangement, it works for me. Not to say it would work for you, but the point I want to make is that you need to know what you want to do with the lens before you can make an informed decision as to what to buy.
