Default Telephoto or zoom lens for D3000

I'm a new amature photographer. I would like to purchase a starter Zoom or Telephoto lens for my D3000 Nikon SLR Camara. Would anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks:

Probably the Nikon 55-200VR would be a good bet, but it would be nice to know what you want to accomplish with it and what you have now.

Are these better buys than an 18-200 VR if you have already have an 18-55 kit lens?

If you are on a budget the 55-200VR would be the way to go.

The 18-200 would replace your 18-55 and the 55-200 together, but the quality isn't as good. Im sure my good friend kirbinster will say the opposite, but I was never happy with my 18-200.

I'm a newbie DSLR myself, but to go with my D3000 I chose the 18-105 VR lens, and am quite happy with it. Very versatile, lightweight, and decent quality (for my standards). I hope to keep busy with this setup for quite a while.

I have the D3000 also and just did a post on this in another part of the forum... the biggest thing is you have to remember that your camera body doesn't have AF, so you have to get a lens with AF! I just ordered the 55-200 AF VR IF ED ( ha ha! lots of letters) I hope that I will love it, its my first lens to buy!

Actually, you need a lens with AF-S. AF is for the screwdriven lenses that DONT autofocus on the smaller bodies.
