Dear lynweber,
I am also a Nikon D5000 user. I explore websites after reading your this quarry, and found one website "http://d40xd60.wikidot.com/lens-compatibility" it says that, "Nikon's first autofocus lenses (excluding the special lenses for the F3AF, which aren't covered here) were released in 1986, specifically marked "AF Nikkor". These lenses are fitted with a Central Processing Unit, which transmits information about the lens electronically to compatible bodies. The lens elements are automatically focused though a coupling with a focus motor in the camera body. AF-D lenses, denoted by a 'D' after the aperture value on the lens (i.e. "AF Nikkor 35mm 1:2D"), were a later revision that enabled slightly better exposure by informing the camera of the distance at which it is focused." So, it won't auto focus if the camera body not having any motor inside. That means we have to manually focus in our camera if we wish to use it. For a compatibility list you can see the website.

It won't AF on a D5000, but not for the reason pjgoswami mentioned.
Tamron has yet to make this lens with the necessary motor built into the lens.

Some Tamron/Tokina/Sigma lenses have these motors, some don't. This falls into the latter.

I own the lens. It focuses on my D40 so it will focus on your D5000. Tamron doesn't really do as good a job as Nikon or even Sigma in indicating this in their lens names.

... or their website, which, when i checked, indicated this lens did NOT AF on the smaller bodies.

Yeah, that's weird. It just says "Coming soon". At least Adorama goes out of their way to specify "built-in motor" in the product listing. Looks like they recently dropped the price $50 as well. Damn.
