If I get a D90, does it continuously focus while snapping at 4.5fps?
Or does it only focus once for the whole series of images?

I think that depends on if you are holding the AF button down. But if you are on continuous focus, it should try to focus in between shots.

Thanks. Reason I'm asking is on my Nikon E8400 (high end coolpix back in '04) it only focuses once for the set of images. Even on continuous AF. Which is kinda stupid

No, it needs to be set to AF-C. The Servo mode is for a single-focus.
