Default Any Suggestions?

I was asked this question by a member of our camera club. Being a Canon user, I don't have an answer. Any Nikon people who could offer some advice? Thanks!

"I am thinking of trading in one or more of my Nikon film cameras (FM, F100, F3, F4) and getting into digital. I have looked at the D5000 and have heard both pro and not so pro comments. What might be the next step up from the D5000, with getting too expensive. I want the ability to change lenses. If any of my autofocus lenses would also work on a DSLR, that would be a plus (nikon 75-105af, sigma 100-300af). Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated."

And the advantage of the D90 over the D5000 is that if the person does want to keep those old lenses, so long as they were originally AF lenses, they should still work with AF on the D90, whereas the D5000 only auto focuses with AF-S lenses.

Dear Mr. XFYRCHIEF, I am also new to this forum as well as to photography. If I have any one of the list you given Nikon body I would keep those as my collection as well as would use in some special purpose. So it is my request to you to keep these bodies.

You are most well come to Digital photography world. I have a Nikon D5000, I liked it too much but it not having any internal motor so could not use any old AF lenses with this for autofocus (but you can focus manually). So if you want to use any old AF lenses then you have to select any digital body with internal motor. Nikon D40/D40X, D60/D3000 & D5000 not having any internal on body motor. So these cameras need new version of auto focus lens which is call as AF-S for Nikon, HSM for Sigma & BIM for Tamron. So this much I can say regarding your quarry. But all of the beauty is that you have to increase your budget (for me I could not). One thing you can search some of our senior member advised to some member about Nikon D80 (of course used one). You can see their opinion regarding that, and take the decision.

With my little knowledge I can say this much only, if I left some point our senior will guide us.

If he's a fan of that F4, then the D90 should be the lowest he should look at. The F line has always been pretty amazing.

Additonally, Nicole has the biggest point: his lenses probably won't be autofocussing on the D40/x/60/3000/5000.
