Default D90 or D300 advice needed

I would like to get a new camera and cannot decide which one would be best. I mostly shoot people, but also enjoy some landscape. I now have a D70 and getting more and more frustrated with its metering, and small LCD. I am not a pro (obviously) and know a "better" camera is not going to make a better photo. I do not care about the movie ability so would not be interested in the 300s. Any advice I would appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I know a local photographer that is switching to Canon FF and is selling his D90 for $700.

He's only had nice things to say about it. I shoot a D300s and of course I love it but I also loved my D80 so if it falls between the 2 I'd say a D90 would be a great choice.

Well, I know you say you're comparing D90/D300s, but the D300 (not s) can be had for just around $1k (D90 price +/-) on eBay, Craigslist, and at UsedCameras

*Note: UsedCameras has one available in "Excellent" condition for just over $1k right now

I know that it's location dependent, but here in DC D90's are going regularly for $700 or so on CL, whereas the the only D300 (not s) that I've seen under $1000-$1200 was in poor shape (all the rubber grips were coming off).

I have a D90, my good friend just bought a D300 (the one I mentioned above, he threw some gaffer tape on it and it works like a champ) - coming from a D70, I'd say go for the D90. I was able to pick my D90 up and start using it relatively easily (I came from a D60), but his D300 still feels like an alien camera in my hands, all of the controls seem to be different.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I also wondered if it would be "easier" to move to the D90. I have read good reviews, and the menus and controls do seem easy to navigate. I appreciate the input!

It is, essentially, the same camera, just with newer technology. If you're happy with your D70 physically speaking (i.e. in your hands, controls, etc.), then the D90 should be good for you.
