Default Is this lens worth getting?

Hi!! Amazon.com: Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo

It is a nikon 50mm f/1.8, I just recently bought a nikon D5000, I know it won't autofocus and that is ok with me....I am hoping to do some portraits for some family soon and was thinking that for the price this might be a nice lens to get...anyone used this? Any thoughts? I have the kit lens that came with my camera as well as a 55-200mm kit lens as well....thanks,

I AM A MR A

I've got it, but it auto focuses on both my bodies.

I honestly rarely use it, but when I do I'm always blown away by the image quality.

If it were me I'd save a bit more, and get the AF-S version.

I use mine all the time, but it auto focuses on mine (I'm useless with manual focusing though). Another option if you don't have the money for the 50mm AF-S is the 35mm AF-S which is a little wider, but still has the f/1.8 and is around $200 instead of $400. But I use my 50mm heaps because I love the results. I felt lost when my old one bit the dust.

Long story short, I think it's worth having.

I agree about the 35mm AF-S. At any given moment, you are likely to see this on my camera.

I picked up one used for $65 bucks about a month ago. Use it on my d40x so its manual focus only for me.

This lens and the 35mm afs 1.8 are on my camera 50/50 of the time.. Love the lens!

Would love to have the afs version but for the cost, I would say its a must have in the bag..

The 35mm is excellent.

I'm Canon, but use Nikon a fair bit as well.

It's also great for the Movie mode, since ALL lenses will be manual focus on the D5000 when in the Movie mode...

I have the lens but it almost never sees the camera. Only when I am playing around. Also when I am using the underwater housing. but that is only because the 24-70 f2.8 does not fit.

Anyways I am not saying that it is not a good lens. just that I dont really use it much.
