Default nikon 55-200VR or nikon 70-300 non VR

I have a Nikon D70S & mainly shoot landscapes. I have the 18-70 kit lens that came with the camera. I really like this lens . I am considering a new entry level telephoto zoom. I have been looking into the Nikon 55-200 VR lens. It is very affordable. I have read that the Nikon 70-300 is a bit soft & can not afford the VR model. Since I already have 18-70 covered 70-300 seems to make sense but I am leaning toward the 55-200. Any suggestions between the Nikon 55-200VR & Nikon 70-300 non VR
Thanks
Charlie

I'd go with the VR model if you plan to shoot zoomed in. It will make a big difference.

The 55-200VR is a great lens for the price. If you go for the 70-300 only get the VR version, it has much better optics than the non-VR version too.

I got the 18-70 with my D80: it's a wonderful lens. I'd recommend the 70-300 VR: great optics (rivals the 70-200 f2.8 over common apertures and lengths).

Thanks for all the help. Just ordered the 55-200 VR over the 70-300 non VR. For 159.95 plus tax (it is a reconditioned lens) I felt it was my best choice. If I had some extra money & thought I would use it more it would have been the 70-300 VR. I don't know how much I will use it as I mostly shoot at 18 mm for landscapes but it will be a nice addition for special situations.

The 55-200 VR is highly recommendable for everyday shooting. I have both lenses and I use the 70-300 (non VR) on higher end camera bodies with higher ISO capabilites of sensors to compensate for the missing VR.
