The D40 is a great little camera and the 18-55mm a decent little lens. You can do most of the tricks available on any DSLR because you have control over ISO, aperture and shutter speed. However, if you are new to SLR type cameras, you probably need to spend a bit of time getting to know the camera. I'd suggest aperture and shutter priority modes being good starting points, where you just have to deal with one variable. Take lots of pictures, experimenting with different settings and looking back to see how things work.
