16-85 is a wonderful lens for walkaround/kit lens duty.

X2. Much better made than the 18-105mm or 18-135mm. Sharper and less distortion than the 18-105mm too, never tried an 18-135mm, so I can't comment on IQ there. But I wouldn't want to lose VR anyway.

Having owned both the 18-105mm and 16-85mm, it's a toss up whether the 16-85mm is worth 2-3x as much. The 18-105mm is a decent enough lens, and can be gotten very cheap.

I dont like using 3rd party equipment: it often has severe sample variation and is of lower quality. It also has a rather limited range.

I'm using the 16-85mm since July 2009 and I love it. It combines the far end of wide angles as well as portraits in a single glass. Build quality is very good (metal connector, ruber gasket, etc.) and the optic quality is also very good. The only downside is the price if you compare it to other lens but I have no regrets for that lens. I always start with the 16-85mm and I switch if I need to.

Following are 4 pictures taken with this lens

16mm:

34mm:

46mm:
Miniature Yorkshire

72mm:
Coaticook 2009

Hope this help

Definitely. Excellent walkaround range, VR, prosumer build. You're good to go.
