Question My camera will not auto focus!

I have a Nikon D40, lately my camera does not auto focus and I can only focus manually. Should I just replace the lens or is it a problem with the body?

Does the lens you're using have AF-S? Only AF-S lenses will autofocus on a D40.

Assuming your D40 was able to auto focus with the lens. I would check the lens' auto focus switch is set at A position.

Next, I would re-mount the lens and try again.

Listen to this guy here. D40's can only autofocus if the lens mounted on it has a motor within the lens itself.

The AF can be turned off and on through the menu as well. Go to your custom settings menu (it looks like a pencil). From there, go to option #2,(Focus Mode), and make sure the AF is turned on. Even if the switch on the lens is turned on, if it is inadvertently turned off through the menu, it will not work.
Hope this helps!

Thanks! I had to reset the settings and it works now! It seems that I had inadvertently turned it off through the menu. Thanks RLucas!
