Default Ready to Shop... D300s or EOS 7D ???

Ok everyone,

I've finally decided to go ahead and pull the trigger. My two year old son did me a biggie on my tax return and I'm finally going to get a DSLR.

I want you to tell me which you think is the better camera and why. The Nikon D300s or Canon's EOS 7D.

I will be shooting pictures of my son for years to come, some local bands with a 50/1.4, and who knows what else.

I've been reading a lot of Nikon info over the past year or so and have always though that that's the way I would go when I finally could afford to. But it seems like Canon has just as good a product in the 7D.

I look forward to your thoughts....

They are both good systems.

This is from my reply to a similar what camera thread.

#1 What feels best for you when you are holding it. ie; does it feel good to use?

#2 How does it look through the viewfinder? ie; Is it like looking through a tunnel or does it have a big bright viewfinder.

#3 What lenses and accessories are available to meet your needs now and possibly in the future?

#4 What is your budget, including lenses?.

One other thing to keep in mind is that if you will be using off camera flash a lot you may want to look at Nikons creative lighting system.

Canon wins in megapixels and ISO range, but Nikon wins in ISO noise and features. Depending on what you're doing, either one can provide the lenses necessary, though some may be better suited than others.

they both have a max frame rate of 8/sec however the nikon needs the battery grip to achive that, so it will be a heavier camera then.

for shooting photos of your son, frame rate could be a good thing. haha

To quote a coworker: "PUPPIES!"

The difference between 7 and 8 is, for most people, negligible.

Wait till she sleeps before going to bed. She won't notice

Thanks for the replies.

I did get to try each one out and see how they handled. I liked the feel and menu set-up of the D300s. The extra fps of the 7d is nice (I guess) but if you can't get a shot in 7 tries, you ain't gonna get it in 8. I also like the dual card slots on the Nikon.

The Nikon just felt really good in my hands, with an 18-200 on it it was nice and balanced. The Canon, which had a 28-135 mouned to it felt like it wanted to nose dive out of my hand.

After trying them out and reading numerous reviews and comparisons, I have decided that I'm going to become a 'Nikonian'
