I have been taking some pictures of my sons cars to get some fun pictures. This one I took with my 50 mm where I attached a close-up lens +4. I was hoping to get a almost realistic picture by using a high DOF.
What do you think? - is the DOF to extreme? - any hints on getting some more realisme in the picture?

wider DOF if its being used as a product/advertising shot. its still a nice shot, i'd tweak the WB a bit thom the paper is a little blue.. but not by much and up the exposure a bit to make the paper whiter/brighter it will make the shot look more clinical/sterile |

i just waned to add that ive seen some really neat photos of toy cars, where the photographer set up a book or another photo of a road scene with trees and things...it made it look vey real, il see if i can find them and ill post them for you to take a look at...

ok, so i couldnt find the photo that i was talking about, but i did find one that shows the general concept. (fyi- just so theres no confusion, this is not one of my photos. found it in google images). but i might be fun to try something of this sort with your match box cars!

A narrow DoF is never going to make a toy look like the real thing, in fact quite the reverse is true. If you think about fake tilt/shift images they use blur to emulate a narrow DoF, making real scenes look like toys.

My 11 year old son loves photography and would a kick out of doing this with his matchbox cars. I would love to show him a few samples to give him some ideas. Thanks! |

Thanks so much! I bookmarked it to show him when he gets home from school. I know he is going to go GAGA nuts to try this. He might not have the same equipment (he has a sony point and shoot) but being 11 he can come up with some creative ways to overcome this
