Default Screw-In Macro Lenses

Hey there...

Whilst emailing an older photographer whom I often ask for tips, I remembered DPS's review on screw-in macro filter-like lenses. I am hoping to acquire an EOS 400d soon, and will miss the 'macro' functionality of my point-and-shoot, so I am thinking of buying some.

Has anyone ever used these? What is the quality like?

Thanks in advance

Never used one before but I know that macro enses give much better results. Maybe someone here has examples to compare?

im pretty sure that these screw in filter type macro lenses are just magnifying the image... i couldn't afford to get a nice brand new lens so i opted for a second hand sigma macro 2.8 lens for a 115$ US from KEH.com...

(all available in super large size - so click em to see full sized!)

I took these photos on my Sony A100 using a set of screw in macro filters that I got for my birthday in November. The quality is great (unlike my photography skills!), but it's a bit of a pain having to swap the filters around to get the different focus levels (my set contains a 4 different filters of various focus levels that you can mix and match).

I can't afford a dedicated macro lens yet as I don't do a lot of macro photography but these are more than good enough for the job until I can (plus I only paid £30 for them from ebay!!)

Wow, I like how those shots turned out andy206uk. I'm hoping to get a macro lens in the future, but until then, it looks like the filters might be a viable option

Lovely shots Andy. I've added them to the DPS post on screw in lenses as an example of what can be achieved.

I'm not sure... what do you mean by a 'sweet spot'?

OMG! I can't believe you've used my pictures on the main site! How cool is that!

PS... the little blue dude is called Mr P you can get him from www.propagandaonline.com and loads of other online stores (including firebox.com for example).

sweet spot is what is in focus.. .. when using a 50mm in reversed .. you have like only a few mm of movement or you loose your focus...
