I decided to buy the 100mm f/2.8L lens, it arrived today and it's absolutly awesome!
Here's a very quick shot taken within 2 minutes of putting the lens on the camera. ![]() Link to slightly larger pic In RAW, the detail here is unbelieveable, I'm really pleased with this lens, now I just need to take some decent pics ![]() Many thanks for all your help and advice ![]() Jeff Last edited by JeffSmith; 02-07-2010 at 01:54 PM. |

You may not find the IS very useful since you should be using a tripod to begin.

Congratulations Jeff, it's a beautiful lens and your "can't wait to try it out" mushroom shot demonstrates that perfectly.
I'm very pleased that I paid the extra for the IS L-series version. People need to realise that this not only a macro lens, but an extremely capable portrait lens too. This is where the IS is really useful to me. As for always using a tripod for macro shots - I spent 30mins yesterday chasing dragonflies around my garden - they move a lot faster than I could ever move my tripod Again, IS gives that extra little bit of security, though admittedly, not on the Z axiz - that is what AI servo helps with.

Having owned both the non L and now the L version, I'd say if you have the money to spend and macro/portrait photography is one of your main passions, GO for it. It's absolutely awesome in every way, the images have that sort of 3d look everyone loves from old Zeis lenses. Compared to old macro it's a level higher in all respects. Now if budget is tight, I suggest you get the old one, which is absolutely great too, but my L just stays on the body all the time

I've just purchased the 100L a few days ago. Haven't had a chance to really play with it yet, but I think I'm going to really like it. It is a great combination of features in one lens that will be great for a general walk around lens. The IS is most useful at longer focal distances, and provides less benefits for macro work.
I think for those that are seriously into macro photography, they would go for the MP-E 65mm which offers up to 5x magnification. |
