Default Macros using an 18-55mm lens and 12mm extension tube...

This is my first photo post here. A few shots using the poor man's macro method.
These were taking using a Canon 350D and the 18-55mm lens + 12mm extension tube.

I'm told this is a Hawk moth Larva.

Completely agree with this assessment. Fabulous shots with that lens and tube, really well done.

Good job....particularly like the clarity and light in the 2nd shot but great subjects in every shot

Wow... the second one was jaw-dropping awesome. I just bought my first set of tubes and was thinking of purchasing a nifty-50 1.8 just for that dedicated use. Like you...looking for the poor-man's solution to the thousand dollar macro... Looks like, from what you have posted, a similar set up would work just fine! Could you post your exif, too, so I could see your focal length and aperture/shutter combo?

Thanks!

I bought a canon 50mm 1.8 on ebay last weekend. Hope to have next week. It's suppose to be sharper than the lenses i use now so hopefully i can get some nice pics with it. Using my 18-55mm lens i have to get real close to the subject which i guess will be the same using the 50mm. I'd love to have the 100mm macro lens. I just may get it soon too.

Wouldn't the lenses you have now work good? The tamron should be fine. How do i get the exif data? Sorry but i'm no pro at this technical stuff.

I found a site that will give the exif data. Upload a pic from the computer or a url. Jeffrey's Exif viewer

Yes, the Tamron probably will work just fine, but I was thinking that for a mere $99 (list price on B&H) I would have sort of a dedicated lens for macro and I'd have the ability to stop down quite a bit more even from the 2.8--esp since light dropoff is an issue with the tubes. That was my thought, anyway.

I am worried a bit about subject distance, though. How close were you to your subject in the shots you posted?

Maybe an inch or 2 away from them. Those bugs are alive and with the wind moving the flowers it's not easy taking these hand held. I should have the 50mm in a couple days and i'll do a few macros and let you know how it goes...

Did you check the exif data or do you still want it posted?

I'll edit this. I'm pretty close but maybe when i said an inch or 2 it could be misleading. I am very close to the subjects but maybe it's a little more like 3 to 4 inches...
