Same here but grasshoppers can be much harder to get close to so good job there

The focus looks spot on to me. It looks like a pretty heavy crop though...can you put more tubes on?

Default yes and no

These little suckers are really hard to get close to. I had to let them get acclimated to my before they would stay still. Also my tripod is awesome but it also is hard to get it close without disturbing the plant they are sitting on.
I could put more tubes on BUT I only have one. They are expensive for what they are. I will try and get a used one but until then this is all i got.
Yes it was a huge crop. Can you tell by the noise?

Are you using a Canon tube? I find the Kenko tubes work well - mine have seen a fair bit of use on my 50mm f/1.4 too

I can tell by the DoF if it's a crop, the wide aperture used suggests significant cropping and the background noise helps to confirm it. You can't kid a kidder

My extension tube is a canon from the old film days. 12mm.
Do the kenko ones allow for control over aperture

also is there a reason why my 1.4 teleconverter doesn't work on ef-s lenses. also from the film days. Does nothing for my efs lenses as far as more reach.
could i put a lense then a teleconverter and then the extension tube??????

This is nothing more than my aesthetic opinion. I would have liked the shot at the current aperture if it where either higher off center and to the left or right. I think that would have given it a bit more depth without playing with the ap too much. On the other hand up on your focus just a touch and out to 5.6 or 8 may have given the grasshopper more detail and let you de-focus the branch a bit.

Either way it's inspiring and makes me want to order that dang 105 macro just to start playing around with stuff like this.

Good shooting
