Do the kenko ones allow for control over aperture
Yes, The Kenko auto tubes have a full set of contacts allowing control over aperture and autofocus in the normal way. The camera doesn't know the tubes are fitted so the aperture numbers displayed on the body (and in EXIF) remain the same with or without the tubes.

The newer Kenko tubes are also EF-S compatible (my old ones aren't).

The catch is they are not as well built as the Canon tubes but I'm happy to use them with with small, light lenses. The seem fine with my 100mm macro and 65mm macro (which is actually heavier!) both of which I often use with a macro flash hanging from the lens....several times the wight of a 50mm f/1.4. I've had 5 years of regular use out of mine and they are still going strong so I've no complaints

Does a teleconvertor even fit on an EF-S lens? I would have thought it would give more reach in the normal way if it physically fitted onto the lens

yeah the tele converter was also from my film days. it it has the an film mount that allows ef-s lenses to be but on it but it give marginally more reach (almost not noticeable) I don't have many complaints though. i rarely use it as the reach with 1.6 crop is awesome and i don't shoot tele that much.
