I got a cheap set off ebay, don't remember what I paid, maybe ten dollars or so. Very well made, solid and tight. I can only set shutter speed not aperture so I make sure I have plenty of light. I love using them now that I know that there is a very small spot that is in focus, if I use all of the rings. The less rings, the better the focus. You also need some way to steady the camera as it is difficult to handhold it for sharp focus.

have fun!

I use Kenko extension tubes - be aware they will not work with EF-S lens.

Here is shot of my macro setup, using Canon's remote software to 'drive' the camera, including fine focusing & DOF preview.

Here is a stamen within a lily taken with extension tubes.

The Canon EOS Utility supports the followings functions with a 40D:

Remote Live Shooting
Full focus control (course/med/fine)
Depth-of-Field preview
X10 Zoom in window to aid fine focus
Shutter release
Test shooting
Option to store the image on the camera / computer / camera & computer
Select the storage location on the computer

Depending on the mode selected on the camera the following exposure settings can be controlled remotely:

Av Aperture
Tv Shutter Speed
M Shutter Speed & Aperture

Other settings that can be set via the computer include:

Image quality RAW /JPEG variations
Picture style
WB
ISO
Metering mode
EV +2 to -2

Time delay
Interval timer
Bulb shooting

Owner’s name
Date/Time
Firmware

I have found in practise this software easy to use & produce good results + it is bundled free with the camera.

I ordered a set of Kenko tubes a few weeks ago, and they work great with my EF-S lenses. I still prefer not to use auto focus, but it does work if I want to use it.
