Poor Person's Macro

hi all, very nice photo's, i have a question for you people who i feel are experts in this, i tried the reverse lens macro setup, i put a 18-55 mm IS kit lens and put a 50 mm prime lens in reverse mode in front of the 18-55, im getting a small round image in the middle with a lot of black on the outside instead of the squarish images that you people are getting, what am i doing wrong here...

secondly how do i set the aperture for these lenses.
