Default Macro Pictures

I have a Canon S51S which I bought some 18 months ago.
The problem I experience with the camera is that I have difficulties taking close-up pictures.
The camera has a macro zoom facility but I still cannot take the pictures that I want to.
My first digital was a Fuji FinePix A310 and I could take quite nice pictures with this one
and even very close up pictures eg the anthers of a flower. The Fuji allowed me to have the
background out of focus. I usually take pictures in P mode with the Canon.

I do not know whether it is just me who do not know how to set it up but it seems to me
I just cannot come right. At present I even consider replacing this camera with something else.
Because I like growing flowers I like taking pictures of the flowers and sometimes even the
pollen of the flowers.
