Default my first water droplet

Here is a photo of my first water droplet... something seems off to me with this photo, but I'm not sure what to do to make it better.... I cropped it in a bit just because there was so much background compared to the drop.

This was taken with my nifty fifty lens with the kenko extension tubes. It was a bit windy and I had a hard time getting the droplet in focus because of the shallow dof.. that's why I chose the higher aperture number...and bumped up the ISO...

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS
Exposure: 0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 400

Hi Tonja_Renee,

I'm just a beginner but my first thought was that I'd like to zoom in on the drop to see the details of the cute mini flower inside. Maybe you could crop it even closer, if it doesn't get too pixelated? I really like the reflection!

Thanks for responding!! I've had comments on other sites with what I could do with this picture... I could crop it in closer the picture does have enough resolution for that, or I could have concentrated on trying to get the grass blade that the drop is on in focus more as well....

It definitely gave me some ideas of how to approach it again... These flowers were just wild pansies growing in my lawn.. my son even mowed around them so I could try to get a similar shot again... We'll see...

ps. did u use the lens that comes in the box? cos i have that one and im not sure how to get macro shots with it.

You got some really amazing focus here -- in the larger size, I can clearly see the Pansy in the background. Awsome.

As for what is off -- there's a lot of extra space in this photo, and the intended subject (the water drop) is very very small. The coolest part -- the reflection of the flower in the water drop -- is impossible to see without looking at a larger size. So, other things (like the blurred pansy in the background) compete. A nice close crop -- just enough to let us still see the shape of the blurred pansy, but bringing the water drop much closer -- might help you.

Thanks so much for the comments... I appreciate everyone's ideas.. I want to try different methods to see what the result will be. As for your question, this was not taken with my kit lens... I took it with my 50mm 1.8 II lens and kenko extension tubes..

Cropping would be the only option because any closer to the drop and it would have touched my lens.. lol I ruined a few shots by accidently touching the blade of grass and losing the water drop... The DOF was so small and the wind was blowing a small amount, so it felt like a gamble trying to get that refraction in focus. It was fun experimenting with it.. and I can't wait to get a chance to try again.

I love the droplet picture because if you look inside the droplet you can see the flower that was behind it. That is really awesome. The only thing that I think takes away from the picture is that the background is to blurry. I'm sorry I can not suggest how to fix that because I am still learning to use my camera but that is the first thing I notice before the droplet. Other than the background I think it was an awesome capture of a droplet.

Thumbs up good job!

this picture is amazing and i think you could do alot with it. one particular thing i noticed is when i went to view it in full size, it had the perfect crop for it. i think you should crop this so it becomes more landscape style than portrait. aim for the middle and i thiknk it makes a much better picture.

hope this helps!
