Default Yellow and Green (Inula hookeri)

My recent trip round the RHS gardens at Wisley was very successful and netted me a lot of photos I was very pleased with (like the watercolour effect series I shared yesterday). Here is one of my favourites from the whole morning, a glorious yellow flower called Inula hookeri:

Inula hookeri (close-up)

I took several shots (50mm f/1.8 E series lens with Raynox DCR-250 adaptor), experimenting with where to put the focus and this was the one I thought worked best. In particular, I liked the glow of the petals in the foreground and the contrast of the lower third with the more muted (although still rich) yellow of the back part of the flower.

Lessons learned? Have a big enough memory card that you can comfortably take multiple shots of key subjects as you will often find one that seems much more magical than the others.

Hmm nice! The colour is really nice. I like the focussing too.

Very nice, Wulf. I particularly like the DOF and choice of a focus point. Shallow DOF can make for wonderful macros, but it also causes quite a few headaches regarding where to focus. Your choice here works very nicely.

And I couldn't agree more about having a big memory card and shooting lots of each subject. I often feel that if I'd just shot one more with just a little higher/lower aperture that my shot would go from good to great. SD cards are so cheap these days that I think even the 4 gb (or at least the 2 gb) are within most SLR user's reach.

This will be even more so with my new lens. I can now get a shot of about 8mm on a ruler across the frame (Raynox DCR-250 on zoom lens at 300mm)... but depth of field is so minimal that I'm going to struggle to put that super-macro facility to use!
