Default Macro Lens Question

I'm trying to determine the maximum focusing distance while still attaining 1-1 magnification.

For example, I have the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens. I know the closest focusing range, it's either 1' or 1.6', depending on my setting.

What I'm wondering is how far back I can get from the subject and keep the 1-1.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for any/all feedback.

As with all true macro lenses, 1x magnification is achieved at the minimum focus distance.

I was thinking of renting this lens for the annual butterfly show. I was wondering about that as well.

I just bought a new lens with macro capability, but I must not be using it right, because I can't get any macro shots. I was also wondering how far back I need to stand and if I need to use different settings. I can't get 1:1, but I can do 1:2 according to the lens.

Since you are using a macro prime lens, you will only have one shooting distance for 1:1 that depends on the object size.

You can increase the shooting distance if you use a longer focal length.
