Default Macro of a Mushroom

Hi, I'm really new to photography. I took this close up yesterday late afternoon, just after a storm - of a new mushroom.

Any tips on how I could have improved on it? I have a Canon Digital G5. Didn't use any macro lenses or filters. Just used the Macro mode on the Camera. (Would have liked to have got closer but too many leeches around headed my way and didn't want to lie on the ground or hang around - SHUDDER!!)

EXIF info:
Shutter: 1/8
Aperture: 4.97

Love all the forums. tips and photos. All very inspiring.
Thanks.

Hello and welcome

Not sure I'd crop quite so tight around the subject but other than that I think the first one is well done....good job The focus is a bit far back on the 2nd one though - the part of the mushroon nearest the camera is out of focus.

I like them both. You might, however, experiment with using a flash. It would fill in the shadows and make the subject stand out from the background a little. I think the decision of flash or no flash with macro is a personal one, but I almost always use flash. You might decide you prefer your shots without.
