Very nice! Next time you may want to try taking a piece of white letter size paper and use it as a diffuser to cut down on the shadows. It works quite well by letting enough soft light come through. I realize that paper is not always available, but when it is, macro flowers come out much nicer! Keep up the good work!!!!

White flowers are the hardest to photograph in macro because there is no contrast in the colors, but in this case there are other colors present, which makes it looks very sharp and with a nice contrast
I like this one

bigluther, Welcome

You can tape a piece of paper over the plastic front of your flash, you can fold a little envelope that opens into a "box" to slip over the whole flash, you can lay a tissue over the flash. The point is to scatter the bright light into a softer, more diffuse light, as you would see on a cloudy day.

You can also bounce the flash off a ceiling, wall, or piece of clothing if you have a directional flash, getting then a diffused lighting on your bloom, and less sharp shadows.

Well, Jiminy is talking about on the flash. What I meant was take the paper and hold it from the direction that the light is coming from. That means that if the light is coming directly from the left of the flower then hold the paper on the left.

i think there is an easier way to lighten the shades; since flowers are easy to move, u can just hold the stem and move the flower so that it points to the sky (if outdoors) or to a window or a bright spot (if indoors). thus u don't need to use this paper..

I'd be hesitant to do that. Anything hand held, such as the stem in this case, and you're likely to have movement, leading to an out of focus shot. Of course you could always tie the stem off to another beside it.

I see your point but you could still have the problem of harsh light, paper cuts that out.....
