Question What size coupling ring to get?

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help me figure this out. I have a Canon 18-55 lens, which has a diameter of 58mm, and a Canon 50mm lens, which has a diameter of 52mm. I'd like to try the reverse lens technique, but I'm unsure of what size coupling ring to get. Or do I need both a coupling ring and a step up/step down ring? I'm confoooooozed.

I've looked all over this forum and I just can't seem to find it, please forgive me if I missed it.

Thanks!

Um...I think I may have figured it out - I'd mount my 18-55 on my camera, then put a 58mm coupling ring on, then attach a 52mm step down ring, then reverse my 50mm and screw it on?

Does that sound right or am I clueless???

Hi Susan~ I am also curious for someone to give you this answer. I have the 28-135mm(72mm front) and the 50mm (52mm front) that I would like to reverse as well together. Sorry I can not help you out. I do know you can hold the 50mm in front of your attached lens in place. However, I always have that fear that I may forget it is not attached and let go. Ooohh! That is just a sickening thought to me. I hope you get an answer soon.

If you can find a 58-to-52 coupling ring, that would probably be the best, but yes, you can use a 58-58 coupling ring and a 52-58 step-up ring. The up/down is always looking from the lens's point of view, so if you want to convert to a bigger size than the lens takes, it's a step-up ring, if you want to convert to a smaller size (never recommended because of vignetting issues), it's a step-down ring.

Thank you from me as well. This is just the answer I also needed. Thanks!

Susan, have you tried this technique with your lens ? does it gave good results ?

I have trying using a 18-55 with 35-80mm. I don't get the result I want as the front lens does not have a big aperture opening.

I'll get a dark ring at the side of the picture.

I just ordered the ring - it should be arriving tomorrow. It was inexpensive enough so it's no big deal if it doesn't work with my 18-55. I'll let you know how I make out!
