I have a 28-70 lens that I use for macro work, but also use a canon extension tube EF25. I just used it with my 70-200 and works more of less like a close up lens.

RXPhotoGirl, I too have a Sigma 300mm - I found that with that lens, you have to be about 2-3 feet from your subject when in Macro. On my 55mm I can get within inches. Once I figured that out, I loved the lens. I had your same frustration for awhile, tho!

I have not been using my SLR for quite sometime after I bought my Digital compact. If my memory serve me right, the min focus length for Sigma 300mm is not very short, probably 1-2 feet and is not easy to go into marco photography with it.
However you can try using a macro adaptor. I had that with my tamron 28-200 with my SLR and it does shorten the focus length, making marco mode possible. Althernatively, forget about marco mode, just take the normal short and use photoshop to crop it. Hope this help.
