I've been toying with photography for a long time but never really got into it for various reason mostly lack of a decent camera, a 350D ended up in my lap thankfully, so I'm playing with that but I'm having issues with Macro, I know a new lens will help but being a student the pay isn't so great.
Here are some photos. The lens focuses well on some parts but not enough in my opinion, is there anyway to help fix this problem? here are some examples. My ring just doesn't seem to want to get into focus (best shot I could achieve at that distance) ![]() This one was alright with the glasses but still not quite there ...

Also, if this is your first SLR, how familiar are you with the concepts of depth of field (DOF), minimum focus distance and aperture/shutter speed combinations? Not a gotcha question, just to gage how much help you may need.

Are you manually focusing? To me it looks like you're using auto focus. You may need to manually focus and possibly decrease your aperture size. Another trick [if you don't like the manual focus or can't] is to use focus lock to focus on your ring, then shift the camera to compose your shot.
