S3 user.. please help with basics!!!!

hi everybody,
i've a canon powershot s3 IS and recently i ws gifted a 16piece filter set with the adapter to fit them to the camera..
i got a +1, +2, +4 and a +10 macro lenses.. i tried them out but i ahve the followin doubts..
1. wen i am using them, is that i can use them without activatin the macro or super macro function on s3?
2. wen i stacked them up.. i dint get a clear focus on the subject evn aftr playin with the adjustmets for some time... wat am i missin?
3. should i use them after activatin the macro mode?

the S3 has a great super macro already! I miss it. LOL
I know when using the close-up filters on a DSLR that you have to manually focus, auto-focus wont work. maybe try that???
