I've used the point and shoot Sony Cyber-Shot, P series camera. I've enjoyed the macro mode immensely. Once you've got the hang of what focusing feature to use; Center or Area, it took wonderfully detailed pictures that amazed me.

I came upon this camera after looking at reviews of it over on DPReview.

I've taken close to 15,000 pictures with this camera over the last few years and it has not let me down.

Edit / Update: I originally printed 30k pics. Just did a file count. It FELT like 30k. Actual number is 14,389 pics.

From... mid range price to upper range (US$250 and up)

Many thanks in advance
Hey, I picked out a Nikon coolpix s550 for my girlfriend last summer, It has a macro setting that works pretty well I'd say. It was pretty cheap, I think 130 or so on sale but they have even better models. It gets the job done. some examples below... Also it has a cool color selection setting that I'm a fan of.

since I'm just a starter hobbyist, not sure the size will encourage me to bring it everywhere, and thinking if "I fall out of interest", it'll be quite a pricey camera for just point and shoot.

but thanks anyway for all who gave suggestions

Because of the ability to interchange and upgrade lenses, the DSLR will always have a higher re-sale value. If you lose interest in photography, this might be an important point to consider.

well.... thanking you all for some great advices and inputs.
and after some thoughts, bought an XSi kit (18-55 IS plus 75-300 III) on Boxing day for around US$740.
now is trying to sell the zoom lens for a macro lens fund.

well then.... I'll make another thread or post somewhere else for chit chat

*edit: almost forgot... I made a flickr account, I'm winm there.
is currently empty, and most likely I'll upload trial and error shots.
thanks again to everyone

Hai!

Im using Canon PowerShot SX 100 IS (the newest are PowerShot SX 110 IS)

you can see the results in my flickr (Email: Dodi_heru@yahoo.com)

Between Canon G9 and G10, i prefer G10. you can change the lens with additional converter from Canon.

Hope this will help you

cheers

Seems that you have made a decision to go for a DSLR. I personally think that a DSLR has far advantages then a digital Compact.

I'm using a Digital compact myself for 5 years and I beginning to get bored with the camera. not to say is no good, but just limited in functions. More over, nowadays those entry level DSLR is quite cheap and worth going for it.

As for your lens, the 18-55 should give you quite a good macro shot. Have you tried using this lens for macro shooting ? How's the result like ?

I have.
but can't say a "true" macro. more like a close-up

Just get one of the "smaller" DSLRs if money is not "the" issue.

It's even harder to learn DSLR when you come from a P&S then going right for it if you have the chance.

Yes, got to agree, the 18-55mm is more to a close up then true micro. If you really want to get true macro shot, like shooting small ants, then you have to go for macro lens. The minimum focus length on macro lens is much shorter, you can actually go to almost 1-2 cm close to the object.

Anyway, I'm into my first DSLR project now, collecting closeup short of various object. We can share notes if you like. You can check out My close up gallery at Nix Digital Photo World.

Just started it with my new D60, so it will take abit of time before I can update it will more pic.

cheers
