Default Wicked ugly hairy fly

This photo was taken in my backyard by a cooperative but ugly fly. I used my new Canon EOS 40D with a EF50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro +LSC. ISO 400; f5; 1/125. I know DOF is extremely thin with a macro lens, but does anyone have any tried-and-true tips on maximizing DOF without compromising exposure? Is a smaller aperture the only option?

Sorry I'm not any help since I don't own a macro lens. I never realized flys were this hairy. My guess would be to use a smaller aperature and increase your iso accordingly.

Welcome to the forum - hope to see many more or your shots!

I'm pretty sure that a smaller aperature is the only solution.......unless you would consider a "Fly-swatter", it tends to place the entire fly in the 1/2 mm DOF sweetspot.LOL
P.S. Cool shot, and welcome to DPS.

dang thats nasty.. good work though.

the only way i know of for increasing the dof is using a smaller aperture and boosting ambient by way of lights.. or up iso.
i know dof varies by focal length.. but probably not much. sorry not an expert here

I agree. You'll need a smaller aperture. If you have a flash, use it.

P.S. Welcome to DPS!

you need to have the background further away from your subject.
the wall you shot against is still within the dof.. so the further the background is away from the point you focus on.. the more blurry it will be
