Default First attempts at macro photography

I don't own a macro lens, but do have a 10x macro filter. I used that on my 28-105mm lens for these.

could you post the focal length & aperture?
good result.

i only have a 18-135.. and 135mm produced pretty good macro's.

Well...I downloaded the pics then deleted them from my camera, so I really am not certain of all the settings. If I remember correctly, I was at about 100/125mm and the aperture was set at f10 for the first one. I might have bumped it down a bit for the 2nd picture, though. I didn't really pay too much attention to that, as I was busy finding cool things to focus on AND trying to avoid being stung by bees. This particular plant is very popular with bees!!

THIS is why I joined this forum! So helpful. And, as it turns out, I was so wrong in my guesses. Here is what the properties say:

Picture 1 - 80mm, f8, 1/500

Picture 2 - 75mm, f8, 1/640

far out.. thats quite good. fantastic DOF for f8
the best macro i could get (closest) was at full 135mm..

did you use the "macro" mode? i dont think i found any difference between macro mode and aperture priority. Ap was actually better because the flash wouldnt get all iffy and fire on its own accord.

could you tell us more about the macro filter.. what it actually is?
does it make any noticable difference in the images?

thanks

Well, the macro filter I used is part of this set:

http://www.amazon.com/Opteka-Close-U...3415749&sr=8-4

I think it helped "thin" out the depth of field a bit more than it would have been without. I shot it in Av mode. No flash.

Tomorrow, I'll do a test shot with and without the filter so you can see and compare...how's that?

Well, Tina, if this is your first attempt, I can't wait to see what else you come up with. These are absolutely lovely!

So, I did the test today with and without the 10x macro filter...I couldn't even get close enough with my zoom lens to get anything even resembling a macro or close-up.
