I use a Siegelite flash bracket which I bought used very inexpensively years ago along with a Lumiquest Softbox. I now use a 550EX flash rather than the 420EX but, in both cases, I use a Canon "Off-Camera Flash Cord".

The Siegelite bracket is no longer manufactured but can be found on eBay at very cheap prices.

There are Chinese rip-offs of the Lumiquest available very inexpensively on ebay also.

You can get this setup (minus the flash and cord) very inexpensively. I learned the technique for shooting and lighting macros this way from Dr. Deepak Rao a physician and expert macro photographer from Bangalore, India.

The Siegelite articulates and can place the flash anywhere you desire. The grip enables you to hold the camera/lens steady. I like to hand hold for shooting little creepy-crawlies.

Setup looks intimidating, but the shots great. I hope to get to those types of shots at some point.
