Your best bet might be to get an accessory for one of your lenses such as an extension tube or a close-up filter. Here is an article on the blog that explains them better. Both are cheaper alternatives than buying a dedicated macro lens. There is also a way to attach your 50mm lens on backwards, but I haven't tried that.

I was trying this tricj with 50 mm. It's really close but DoF is extreamly short , and it's hard to do that without special ring to attach them together. |

Why not? If I remember correctly the kit lens gets about a 1:3 Macro ratio. Not 1:1 but with a bit of cropping it's enough of a start. Here's an image I took with my Sigma 18-50 Macro, probably not at full close focus but it's about what you can expect(though I just realized the resized image doesn't really do justice). The nice thing is that you'll be stopping down a bit to get a decent depth of field so you'll be hopefully performing when the kit lens is at it's best.
![]() Also you could reverse your lenses on your camera and you'll get real macro. I tried it with my kit lens once but seeing as I had to hand hold my lens onto my camera, I didn't know how to force it to stop down so I was shooting at f/3.5, and I really couldn't focus, I hadn't tried it since. However, I know you can mount your nifty fifty in reverse and you could get nice results doing this. Here's a link. http://soavephotography.blogspot.com...ens-macro.html edit* Ha, yeah it should be since the 50mm is a f/1.8 lens. Next time you try it mount your lens, set it whatever aperture you want, hit the dof preview button, and dismount the lens while holding the button down. It'll keep your lens stopped down. The problem with this however is that your viewfinder will be very dim(at f/8 it'll be more than 16 times dimmer). Also, when you hold your lens onto your camera you're just pumping dust onto the mirror, focus screen, and sensor so don't do it too often. Last edited by lonelyjew; 09-08-2008 at 09:01 PM. |
