Use a smaller aperture to get larger DOF. Also, i've found it helps to use manual focus and focus to 1:1 magnification. Then use your body to move the camera closer or farther away from the subject until it is in focus. I've used the 100mm 2.8 and have found it very sharp and contrasty. Go out, experiment and have fun!

Default Macro Help

As dpsteak said, close down the aperture a few stops and yes use a tripod whenever possible. Try experimenting with the lens using different different settings this will let you see what the lens is capable of doing.
